Now certified for Ammonia (NH3) to EPA Performance Specification 18 (PS-18) IP CEMS requirements modified for NH3

Our Model 7000 NH3 TDL is shown to meet Federal Performance Specifications PS-18 modified for NHusing Optical Integrated path CEMS.

Whether your application is a Gas Turbine, Coal Fired Boiler, Furnace, IC Engine, etc, you may now replace your troublesome differential NOx CEMS with our TDL whether its subject to PPS-001, PS-2, or any other Federal or State NH3 Permit requirements.

HISTORY

In 2012, CEMTEK, using a Unisearch Associates HCl TDL analyzer was invited to participate in a field evaluation project where four HCl CEMS were evaluated. CEMTEK’s interest was to perform and practice some of the tests in the EPA draft performance specification 18. At the same time we were providing comments and feed back to the EPA team developing the PS as a stakeholder. As a result of this field evaluation project, the regulation was passed for HCl for Coal Fired Power Plants with new Performance Specifications 18 for Tunable Diode Lasers.

In addition to HCl, PS-18 guidelines highly recommend using PS-18 as a template for the measurement of other gasses such as Ammonia (NH3) slip. Up until now, Differential NOx, technology has been the only viable solution for meeting NH3 slip limits via PS-2 as there are no NH3 performance specifications written.

Fast forward to 2020, CEMTEK was sought out by a major electric utility to solve their need to comply with Ammonia (NH3) Slip. This client was using the traditional form of NOx differential measuring NOx at the stack location but was not able to monitor accurately or pass the required RATA certification. The client approached CEMTEK to solve their NH3 monitoring requirements by utilizing a Tunable Diode Laser (TDL).

With 50+ years of CEMS experience, CEMTEK stepped up to the challenge using our Model 7000 Tunable Diode Laser. Many tests are required to pass a PS-18 certification including:

  • Factory Controlled Tests
  • Interference Test / Level of Detection (LOD) Determination / Response Time /
  • Linearity (Covered Later)
  • Field light attenuation test
  • Field Temperature verification
  • Field Pressure verification
  • Field Response Time
  • Field Level of Detection (LOD) Determination
  • Seven Day Calibration Zero & Span Drift Test
  • Measurement Error (Low, Mid, High Linearity)Relative Accuracy Test Audit

In March 2021, all required tests were performed and successfully passed approving the CEMTEK Model 7000 NH3 analyzer in full compliance of PS-18 for NH3 monitoring.

Product Description

The Model 7000 Laser Monitor is a continuous monitor designed to measure flue gases for both compliance and process monitoring. The Controller uses a near infrared (NIR) Tunable Diode Laser Absorption Spectrometer System utilizing a single mode “DFB” laser mounted in a thermoelectric cooler for unsurpassed accuracy and performance. Since the Spectral purity of the laser is high and the selected absorption feature is unique, measurements can be made free of interferences from any other gas. The measurements are made in-situ across the stack or duct in either a single or dual pass design depending upon the application. A Windows based software package is available to display the data on either a Host laptop PC or the client’s existing data acquisition system.
